Childhood and early life
Little is known about Faith's roots. Faith was a working-class girl from Boston with little family. Faith let on to Buffy how she felt about how Buffy had it all, while she herself had nothing. She continued by saying that as a kid she wanted her mother to give her a dog, but her mother, according to Faith, was an alcoholic and was never there for her, busy as she was drinking and passing out. Faith also mentioned that she has never managed to maintain a stable relationship with a guy, her experiences including a dating kleptomaniac and slackers, referring to herself as "a loser magnet". The poor conditions in which she grew up may explain why slaying gives her such a stimulating feeling of excitement. Being chosen to be a slayer probably gave meaning to her life, made her feel like more than just a poor valueless teenager. It can also explain why she connects with Buffy's friends, mother and watcher so quickly when she arrives at Sunnydale, seeing in them the family and friends she never had.
Faith as a slayer
Before a rapt audience - the Scooby Gang - she told intriguing tales of her life as a Slayer, which was different from that of Buffy. Giles thought Faith had a lot of zest. She repeatedly stated that slaying made her either hungry or horny, and one night, Xander found out to what extent that was true, after he had helped her escape a vicious demon.
Faith seemed to be burdened by the memories of when she had to watch Kakistos murder her watcher, and she couldn't do anything about it. According to Faith her watcher was killed in ways for which there were no words. The memories came back when she and Buffy once again encountered Kakistos.
Faith's downfall and amends
The downfall of Slayer Faith begun when she accidentally killed a human, the Deputy Mayor Finch. It seems that Faith tried to put the entire incident behind her, as she not only dumped the body, she also tried to make the claim that she didn't care that she killed a human. Later on, Faith told Giles that it was Buffy who killed Finch. Giles knew she was lying, but played along to avoid pushing her too far. The Scooby Gang decided to help Faith. Xander went to Faith's motel room to try and reason with her, but he got nowhere, instead ending up in a dangerous situation. He was helped out of it when Angel kidnapped Faith and brought her to his mansion.
The new watcher, Wesley, together with a group of assistants, tried to arrest her and take her back to England, but Faith escaped from the car. Isolated and afraid, she turned to Mayor Wilkins, the "Big Bad" of Season 3. Initially she kept up appearances of being allied with the Buffy gang, but during a nefarious plot to rob Angel of his soul, the truth was revealed. Her slide further into the world of evil became more and more blatant, and she even kidnapped Willow at knife-point and threatened to kill her.
After mortally wounding Angel with a poison arrow, apparently and for some reason intentionally missing his heart, the Scooby Gang finds out that the only antidote was drinking the blood of a Slayer. Buffy heads to Faith's apartment in an attempt to use her as the cure. The resulting epic battle left Faith in a coma, after Buffy stabbed Faith with her own knife.
While Faith was still in coma and Buffy unconscious at the same hostpital, they shared a dream, in which they didn't seem to be enemies. It was a very calm and relaxed dream, where Faith behaved without her usual tough attitude. She gave an important clue to Buffy on how to defeat Mayor Wilkins; that his human weaknesses never goes away, even if he would become a demon. In combination, the connection between Buffy and Faith before the episode Bad Girls and this dream could mean that Faith had a wish to return to the good side and the Scooby Gang.
She awoke in the middle of Season 4. Borderline psychotic, she taunted Buffy and her friends and even attacked Joyce. As Buffy was about to win the ensuing battle, Faith used a magical device to swap bodies with Buffy. Since Buffy (in Faith's body) was to be taken back to England, Faith (as Buffy) planned to flee the country. She made some rude comments to Tara and slept with Buffy's new boyfriend, Riley. However, Faith finally began to understand more about Buffy and the love that Buffy felt from her friends and family. It was during this period of acting as Buffy, the "good" slayer, that Faith's attitude started to noticeably change for the better. Once Buffy managed to undo the body-switching spell, Faith reverted to her angry psychotic state, and left Sunnydale for Los Angeles.
In Los Angeles, she rampaged through the underworld, stealing what she needed and squatting in her victims' apartments. She was approached by Wolfram & Hart with a mission--kill Angel. She made contact with Angel, showcasing her "evil" for him to see. She kidnapped Wesley and brutally tortured him. However, during a fight with Angel, her true motivations became known and she begged Angel to just kill her. Angel would not, and began the task of saving Faith's soul. Just as Faith began to process the events and feel remorse for what she'd done, Buffy showed up looking for revenge, insisting that Faith must go to jail. As the Watchers Council tried to track her down, Faith decided to go to the police and admit her guilt for the prior year's murders in Sunnydale. Faith went on to a women's prison, where Angel visited her regularly to make sure she was still on the road to redemption.
In Season 4 of Angel, Faith was surprisingly attacked in prison with a Bringer's knife. Soon after, she was recruited by Wesley to help find newly soulless Angelus and assist in once again restoring his soul. Recognizing that the only man who'd ever believed in her needed help, she easily broke out of prison. She found Angelus and did battle, eventually using a mystical drug to infiltrate Angelus' mind while Willow worked a spell to restore his soul. With a new appreciation of good and evil, Faith joined Willow in returning to Sunnydale to battle the First Evil. At first, Faith tried to be second-in-charge to Buffy and mend bridges for her prior behavior. However, as Buffy's decisions became more and more erratic, Faith openly questioned her ability to lead and along with Anya and Potentials Kennedy and Rona) led a mutiny of the Scooby gang against Buffy. Her leadership was short lived, as her first offensive attack turned out to be a trap. Faith was badly wounded, both physically and emotionally. It was while she was on the mend that she and Buffy finally made peace. Buffy never forgave her for what she'd done, but they came to an understanding that their relationship was doomed from the get-go... they're not supposed to exist together. It is possible that this conversation was the impetus of Buffy's idea to create a slayer army.
Back in good graces, Faith played a pivotal role in the final battle with the First Evil's army and possibly can look forward to a relationship with Robin Wood.
Faith and Buffy
The relationship between Faith and Buffy is a complex one. Originally, they fought side by side as allies, but there were always hints of tension and jealousy between them. Faith was a working-class girl from Boston with little family who spoke and acted freely without regard for manners. Buffy was more proper, having been raised by a loving mother and learning to behave in more socially acceptable manners. Even when allied, Faith felt like an outsider in Buffy's world. This was only reinforced when Buffy held the truth about Angel's return from her. However, Buffy still trusted Faith enough to leave her to protect her mother at Christmas, and even showed hints of being attracted by Faith's wilder way of slaying.
The relationship deteriorated after Faith accidentally killed a human. However, it is possible that Faith had a wish to return to the Scooby Gang and the good side. One example is when Willow told Faith that it's way too late to help her, Faith's reaction, her facial expression, could reveal either surprise that the normally quiet Willow would be so outspoken, or, that Faith really wanted to hear the usual answer, because that would confirm to her that she could go back one day. Another example could be the dream she had while still in a coma. In it, she still had the knife in her abdomen, and she asked Buffy if she was ever going to remove it. Another dream likely indicated how she was still unsure about Buffy's feelings, after Buffy killing Mayor Wilkins with Faith's knife and then going after Faith.
